On 29 September the final report for the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability was tabled in federal parliament.
The Royal Commission made over 200 recommendations on how to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to ensure a more inclusive and just society that supports the independence of people with disability.
In light of such a momentous occasion in the disability sector it was a great pleasure to be joined by president of People with Disability Australia, Nicole Lee. Sam caught up with Nicole to get her response to the Royal Commission’s findings, and the action she wants to see taken to see better outcomes for people with disability.
“We just keep moving forward as a community and we keep doing what we’re doing. This report just gives us more evidence to push back on the things that we’ve had to tolerate and put up with for far too long in our lives, so I think there’s a lot of things that are going to change moving forward,” Nicole said.
There are a number of wins Nicole has observed that have emerged from the recommendations that the commission has handed down including, among other things, a series of frameworks to solidify the human rights of people with disability.
“These aren’t something I feel we ultimately needed a Royal Commission to work out but regardless we now have recommendations around them. Some of these things are not something we need a long plan of action for, we can do them right now,” she said.
